In the year 2126, YGGDRASIL, a Full-Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or DMMORPG, was released. Due to the extremely high level of player interaction, it stood out from all previous DMMORPGs.
After a lengthy 12-year existence, the game servers are prepared to be shut down. There once was a guild called Ainz Ooal Gown, which had 41 members and was thought to be one of the game’s strongest guilds. There are only four players left in the game; the other 37 have given up.
The guild’s leadership is represented by the skeletal “Overlord” figure Momonga, and The Great Tomb of Nazarick continues to serve as their base of operations. Minutes before the shutdown, he sends out an invitation to the remaining guild members, but only one shows up—and even then, only briefly.
While disappointed by this, he decides to stay signed in until the servers crash because he understands that his friends have real lives to live. When the game’s shutdown time arrives, Momonga finds that it hasn’t actually ended. Instead, it appears that Nazarick has been transferred to an entirely new universe, with all of its various NPCs having grown conscious.
Momonga can no longer access standard player features like General Message or even log out because he has been locked in the form of his gaming avatar. Momonga is forced to investigate whether anyone else from the real world is present in this new realm alongside him.
Assuming the identity of the guild, Ainz Ooal Gown, Momonga starts travelling the world to try to figure out what has happened and search for anyone or anything that might help him solve this puzzle while ensuring Nazarick’s safety.
Since Ooal Ainz Gown has no moral inhibitions about killing people and engaging in other behaviours that are illegal in real life, it appears that in-game mechanisms have changed the character’s personality. This is a story about the mindset of a monster with almost limitless power who disregards morality.
