The Future Diary is a dating reality TV show that stars Daigo as the host and focuses on relationships between strangers. Season 1 of The Future Diary premiered in 2021, and episodes 1–4 of season 2 will premiere on May 17.
In many ways, I believe we can all agree that The Future Diary was unique. Despite the fact that we’ve seen a number of reality dating shows in recent years, there’s something new about this one that will pique your interest right away. Takuto and Maai’s love story was told in the first season of The Future Diary, as they met for the first time and gradually fell in love.
Season 1 of The Future Diary was a lot of things, and with season 2 premiering on May 17 with all-new characters, I’m really excited to see what the series has in store for us this time. Season 1 felt oddly manipulative and voyeuristic, despite being fresh and raw. First and foremost, keep in mind that Takuto and Maai are still quite young. I believe that in order for reality shows like this to avoid becoming completely one-sided, the contestants should have some personal experience so that the producers do not end up manipulating them.
Yes, seeing new faces is appealing, but Maai is only 19 years old and Takuto is 24. First and foremost, the 5-year age gap seems excessive. If you’re going to cast a reality dating show, choose two people who are in similar stages of their lives. Furthermore, both of these children feel like children. It’s like watching my small siblings be duped into falling in love by the producers, because that’s exactly what happens. Furthermore, given the circumstances, the two’s inexperience is quite apparent and concerning.

Another strange inequity I noticed was how much arduous labour Takuto has to endure. It’s almost cruel to watch him jump through hoops for this stranger he’s never met before. Is she willing to put in the same physical and mental effort to prove her love for him? Not at all. It’s strange and cruel to watch the producers put these kids who have no experience through hell and play with their emotions.
Maai and Takuto return to the sunflower field where they promised to meet a few episodes ago at the end of Season 1 of The Future Diary. It’s sweet, and you almost sigh with relief when the diary stops giving instructions – now they can move forward with their relationship on their own terms. Although it’s difficult to say whether the two kept their relationship going given their lack of social media activity, we can always hope.
Despite the fact that the first season dealt with two people, The Future Diary season 2 features two men competing for a woman’s attention. I have no idea why that is a thing. However, it promises a lot of crying and heartbreak. This time, hopefully, the participants aren’t children. In any case, according to the Youtube description and trailer, The Future Diary season 2 promises to subject the love triangle to even more gruelling cruelty in order for love… or friendship… to blossom.
Chinatsu Wakatsuki, Satoshi Mukai (Panther), Mizuki Itagaki, Miyu Honda, and DAIGO will all be part of the Future Diary season 2 studio cast.
